Abstract:
The impact of outdoor cats on wildlife is a neglected topic in the Canadian veterinary curriculum. As veterinary professionals, our obligations towards the well-being of animals reaches well beyond households & farmyards & includes all animals. Attendees will learn how to make meaningful contributions towards wildlife & habitat conservation through education of clients about domestic cats, owned or unowned.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Smits' research focuses on investigating impacts of anthropogenic contamination & environmental degradation, to inform protective environmental policies. She also investigates naturally exposed wildlife in combination with experimental studies to determine sensitive biomarkers (health effects) of air & water-borne contaminants in wild animals. Her educational activities entail teaching vets & vet students how their practice can enhance conservation and protect ecosystem health with responsible management of domestic animals and livestock. Her research also includes work to relieve chronic arsenic poisoning in human populations.
