POCUS DETAILS
Ever struggle with determining the cause of dyspnea in a cat that is too unstable to take radiographs (cardiac, respiratory, pleural effusion)? Ever wonder if the cat that ate lilies is producing urine when it's not possible to pass a urinary catheter? Ever wonder if the dog with an acute abdomen has free abdominal air in the abdomen, or if the post-operative patient that is not eating has ileus? What about that dog that collapsed at the dog park, does it need IV fluids and does it have pericardial effusion? How much IV fluids to give? So much anxiety!!! This should not be the case! POCUS to the rescue!!! Using a binary approach, assessing the patient and asking the right clinical questions based on clinical findings increases diagnostic accuracy, and makes point of care ultrasound (POCUS) rapid and easy to learn!
With the availability of less expensive, high resolution portable and handheld ultrasound machines, the pressure and expectation to perform sonography in general practice is rapidly increasing. However, performing extensive formal sonographic exams can be intimidating, and the frustration at not being able to identify all internal organs and pathology, lack of experience, and training opportunities deter many practitioners from performing ultrasound in everyday practice. To overcome these limitations focused patient side ultrasound exams, performed by non-specialists, have been defined and successfully applied in both human and veterinary medicine, referred to as POCUS. There are 3 core POCUS skills every practitioner should be able to perform in everyday practice: abdominal POCUS, pleura and lung POCUS, and cardiac POCUS.
Through RACE CE-approved online lectures that you can go through at your own pace, you will learn the principles of POCUS, from the evolution of point-of-care ultrasound to the different applications. Once you have had a chance to visualize these, we can then put it into practice!!!
During an ABVMA CE-accredited 4-hour hands-on workshop on live dogs, we will build on the interactive lectures. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice all of the common veterinary point of care ultrasound techniques currently used to assess the abdomen, pleural space, lung, heart and vascular systems. We will also briefly review basic ultrasound machine functions and use a phantom model to teach ultrasound guided IV access. Total of 12h of CE credit for the lectures and lab.
POCUS TO LIVE, LIVE TO POCUS!!!
